Winter Farm Share registration now open!

While we’re still enjoying peak-season abundance, our local partner farms are busy preparing for fall and winter harvests; it’s time we, too, turn our thoughts to eating well in the colder months. Farm Share, our aggregated CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), is much more than a weekly box of food – it’s a powerful investment in your health, community, and local economy. Our Winter Share is a curated weekly spread of seasonal local goodies which includes:
fruits and veggies (~60% of weekly box, by volume), a dozen eggs (~10%), and a sampling throughout the season of value-added goods, meat*, cheese, butter, and baked goods* (~30% of weekly share). *Vegetarian and gluten-free options available.*

Winter Share dates:
October 29 – December 17. You purchase 7 shares out of 8 weeks (includes 1 vacation day).
Pick-Up Locations:
West End Farmers Market (1210 Patterson Ave. SW)—Tues, 3-6 pm
NEW! Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital (Riverwalk Parking Garage)—Tues, 4:00-5:30 pm
Price: $285. Average value of a weekly share is just over $40. A typical share might include: 1 doz. eggs, 1 lb. ground beef, ½ lb. cheese, ½ lb. spinach, 1 lb. beets, 3 lbs. potato, 1 bunch parsley, 1 lb. onion, 3 lbs. apples

All shares are HALF PRICE with your EBT card/SNAP benefits, or with proof of Medicaid or WIC enrollment. Talk to us to set up a payment schedule.

Existing Farm Sharers: Refer a friend and get $10 to any LEAP Market!

Registration Deadline: October 7th!

10 years of the Grandin Village Farmers Market!

Join us Saturday, September 28, as we commemorate a decade(!) of local food and community. We want to take this opportunity to recognize our committed vendors and shoppers who make this market what it is. To our loyal shoppers who have been with us for our entire existence: THANK YOU! Wear your throwback market t-shirts and totes to show off how long you have been coming to market 🙂

We’ll have a “Market through the Ages” booth with photos, stories, and swag on display, AND we will be taking orders for original, retro “Fresh Beets” t-shirts (old-timers will remember these classics from back in ’09… $14 each, see picture below). We’ll also have mini cupcakes available by Lemon B’s (limited supply, come early!), live music by Erin Hunter and Joy Truskowski from 9-11, face painting by Katherine Devine, and will also be enjoying our monthly Zucchinis & Bellinis event, with inspired brunch drinks served by the fine folks from Lucky Restaurant!

Please RSVP and share the Facebook event widely within your networks! Thank you to everyone who has helped to build this market and sustain it over the years (including, of course, our long-time supporters, partners, and friends at Roanoke Co+Op)! Cheers to the next 10 years!

LEAP Kitchen hosts English as Second Language/Cooking class

Over the past year, Chris Shockley (pictured, above left) has helped to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) in Roanoke’s West End; his students are predominantly Congolese refugees. Students had petitioned the instructors for a class on the use of home ovens, which are significantly different in form and function than the cooking methods many were accustomed to in their home countries. Such a class couldn’t easily be taught in a traditional classroom setting, and so we were thrilled to facilitate and host the course in our shared kitchen. Chris and company taught their friends the fundamentals of general oven use on our commercial equipment, where the same ideas apply. They used the opportunity to prepare a simple, tasteful dish of locally-sourced vegetables and proteins. With full notepads and bellies, the students left satisfied, with hope and interest in learning new dishes and techniques. From Chris: “Thank you, LEAP Kitchen and staff, for allowing us to use your space to satisfy a community’s hunger for culinary curiosity.”

West End Community Suppers are back!

Many of you may remember the West End community cookouts/suppers that Roanoke Co+Op and LEAP hosted at the West End Farmers Market in years past. After an extended hiatus, we’re thrilled to announce these monthly meals are back! Come out every fourth Wednesday (5:30 ’til the food runs out) for a free locally-sourced meal, and visit with your West End neighbors and friends new and old. This month, join us on 9/25, then again on October 23; in November, we’ll have a very special Thanksgiving take-away meal on 11/27. If you’d like to help with prep, cleanup, or bring a dish to share, volunteers are greatly appreciated – reach out to Ned@LEAPforLocalFood.org. Because sharing food builds community!
