We’d like to introduce you to some new people in local food world. Say hi when you see them around!

Tim Saunders, serving a year-long AmeriCorps State position with LEAP, will focus on outreach and marketing in partnership with Healthy Start.

Tim is a Roanoke native and recently returned to the area after spending 17 years traveling yet mostly living in Western North Carolina. He earned a BA in Environmental Studies and Philosophy at Warren Wilson College near Asheville North Carolina. His great-grandmother, Flora, was a vendor for the Roanoke City Market before he was born; however, his love of local food and farming only ignited once he left home. He is thrilled to return to our valley with a renewed sense of place, a vigor for local food security and a passion for building community. A former chef/caterer, he appreciates the desire to make healthy food economical, flavorful and approachable. In his spare time he loves exploring mountain trails with his dog, Rue,  spending time with his new yoga community at Uttara Yoga, experimenting with fermentation projects in his kitchen, and tending his young Permaculture garden.

Kathleen Reed is the new Agriculture Extension Agent with Virginia Cooperative Extensionserving Roanoke City, Salem, Roanoke County, and Botetourt County. New to the area, Kathleen recently completed a Master’s degree in Community Sustainability with a focus on Community Food and Agriculture System Development from Michigan State University and worked with the MSU Center for Regional Food Systems during her time there.

As an Ag Agent, Kathleen will be working to bring support and resources from Virginia Tech and Virginia State University to the community in the areas of farmer support, community education/programming, community development, food system development, gardening, and more! If you’d like to inquire about programming, ask a question, or introduce yourself, she can be reached at reedka@vt.edu or 540-772-7524.

Did you make it to the Deschutes Street Pub?

It was an amazing day! LEAP was honored to be a beneficiary of the event and a big thanks to all the LEAPsters who volunteered and joined in the fun. The Roanoke Deschutes Street Pub broke records– it welcomed with 22,000 visitors, tapped 241 kegs of Deschutes beer, and raised $81,000 for local non-profits. Join us in welcoming Deschutes Brewery to Roanoke and in thanking Deschutes and Roanoke Outside for putting on a amazing event!
