Dig local, all year long!

Shorter days and colder temperatures don’t mean you need to resort to inferior-quality or weeks-old food shipped from tropical climes. Embrace our seasonal abundance – learn to love the root vegetables, greens, apples, and oh-so-much more that local farmers are working hard to produce right here in our neck of the woods, even during the winter. Challenge yourself to eschew the perceived convenience of environmentally-ruinous industrial food systems. By enjoying the freshest, healthiest, and tastiest food available, you’ll have the added bonus of knowing that your hard-earned dollars will stay here in our community, instead of lining the pockets of middle-men in far-away corporate offices.
LEAP is committed to connecting eaters with sustainable, local farmers. All winter long, our markets will continue to stock what you need to eat fresh, quality food produced by farmers you know and trust. Our winter market schedule is as follows:

Regular schedule and location apply through November 10. Beginning the following Saturday, November 17, we’ll start our Winter Market hours and location:
Every third Saturday of the month (Nov 17, Dec 15, Jan 19, Feb 16, Mar 16)
10:00am – 1:00pm
INSIDE the Grandin CoLab (1327 Grandin Rd. SW)

The West End is open every Tuesday, 3-6pm, YEAR-ROUND!
This year, as both Christmas and New Years Day fall on Tuesdays, we’ll take a two-week holiday hiatus, but otherwise, we’ll be at 1210 Patterson Ave. SW (behind Freedom First) each and every Tuesday, no matter the weather.

Mobile Market Season Wrap-Up

Today marks the end of the fourth season of the LEAP Mobile Market! Come join us this evening at Starr Hill (see below for details) to celebrate another successful summer of providing Roanoke’s limited-access neighborhoods with fresh, healthy produce. Davey and the Mobile Market were able to break down many barriers to accessing fresh, healthy food, as evidenced by the following stats:
  • 10 regularly-scheduled weekly stops in Roanoke neighborhoods that otherwise lack easy access to fresh food
  • 3,250+ transactions
  • 500+ unique customers
  • 63% of shoppers got the majority of their produce from the Mobile Market
  • $31,000+ in sales of locally-produced food
  • $16,000+ in healthy food incentives redeemed by food-insecure families
Thanks so much to everyone who has supported us this season, including all our sponsors, volunteers, and our incredible community of customers. We’re really proud of the Mobile Market and the fact that this program has touched so many lives this year. Support LEAP by Drinking (Local) Beer!

For the entire month of November, we’re partnering with Starr Hill Pilot Brewery & Side Stage’s Cheers for Charity program. For every pint of The Love (their flagship Hefeweizen) purchased at the brewery this month, Starr Hill will donate $1 to LEAP! To celebrate, we’re helping host a couple events, starting this evening!

  • To celebrate another successful season of our Mobile Market (see above), as well as to inaugurate the month’s festivities at Starr Hill, we’ll have Mobile Market Season Wrap Party & Cheers For Charity Kickoff TODAY, Thursday November 1, from 5:30 to 7. The Mobile Market will be fresh off its final stop of the year, and we’ll need to clear out any leftover inventory before we mothball the truck for the winter. Stop by and stock up – rumor has it there’ll be some killer end-of-season deals!
  • Geeks Who Drink trivia: Every Tuesday from 7 to 9pm for the month of November, LEAP will field a trivia team. Come join us, or bring your own crew, and show off your smarts!
  • Local Food Trivia Night: On Monday, November 12, from 7 to 9pm, LEAP will be hosting our very own trivia night! Our volunteer trivia-master Sara will MC the evening, posing food-focused questions for all you know-it-all locavores! Prizes for the winning team will include market gift certificates and more.
  • Local Love Potluck: Kelly has been mulling over the idea of an end-of-season potluck party for our community of Farm Sharers, and lucky for the rest of us, we’ve decided to open it up to the public! On Friday, November 30 at 7pm, bring a dish to share with Roanoke’s local food community, and enjoy an evening of feasting and fellowship. As an added bonus, we’ll have a panel of “celebrity” judges pick the winning dish based on 1) taste, 2) use of local ingredients, and 3) how well it pairs with The Love. Great prizes for the winners, including a $25 bar tab at Starr Hill, market gift certificates, and more!

LEAP Kitchen Food Business Class

Each month, the LEAP Kitchen hosts educational presentations for prospective, bourgeoning, and established food businesses. On Monday, November 26 at 6pm, join Paula Bittinger, Environmental Health Technical Specialist with the Alleghany/Roanoke City Health District, and the staff of the LEAP Kitchen for an educational session about what prepared-food businesses need to know going into a health inspection. Learn from the source what, specifically, the Virginia Department of Health is looking for, common violations they come across, what considerations you need to be aware of, and how the inspection process will look in your business’s particular case. Come with your questions about what certification will entail for your business concept. This session is free and open to anyone interested in the business of food.
Transition to Winter Market schedule
Two more weeks remain of the regular Grandin Market (11.3 and 11.10) before we switch things over to our Winter Market hours and location. Starting 11.17 (the day of the Grandin Village Holiday Children’s Parade), we’ll be inside the CoLab every third Saturday of the month from 10am to 1pm.

Lots of lovely vendors await you each Tuesday in the West End, where you can stock up on much more than just the freshest produce anywhere – baked treats, grass-fed meats, salsa, leather goods (support LOCAL food producers and artisans as you do your holiday gift shopping), and much more!
