Let’s LEAP into 2015!

Nov 10, 2014 by

Right now, there are families throughout our community who don’t have anywhere in their neighborhood to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. At the same time, our local farmers struggle to find places to sell enough of their produce to make ends meet. With your help, LEAP is changing that reality.

Since launching the Grandin Village Community Market in 2009 and the West End Community Market in 2010, LEAP has been working to nurture healthier communities by bringing local food to local folks. In Roanoke City, one out of every four of our neighbors lives more than a mile from the nearest full-service grocery store and one out of every four community members relies on SNAP benefits (food stamps) to feed their families. To meet the community need to access to fresh, healthy, and local food, we are cooking up new programs for 2015 and beyond.

In 2015, we will launch the LEAP Mobile Market that will travel the city and bring fresh healthy fruits and veggies to our neighbors and expand our SNAP Double Value Program to make farm-fresh food more affordable for more people. LEAP is also working with Healthy Roanoke Valley to pilot a fruit and vegetable prescription program to connect the dots between health, nutrition and access to fresh produce. Lastly, we are breaking ground on the LEAP Community Kitchen in the West End that will incubate food entrepreneurs, bring more local food to your table, and create a space for the community to come together and learn about food and cooking.

To make all of this happen, we need to raise $10,000 in the next 5 weeks to jump-start our programs for 2015. Your individual investment, partnered with the grant funding we’ve already received, will build stronger and healthier communities. Help us LEAP into 2015–make a tax-deductible donation today!

In the words of one parent who shops at the West End Community Market: “My kids always know that we will eat something new on Tuesday nights after I use my [market] incentives to buy fruits and vegetables.”
