Local abundance is upon us!

Food Hub breathes new life into Heritage Point

We’re beyond excited to announce a new partnership with the Roanoke Co+Op! Their property at Heritage Point (pictured above), which operated as an urban farm until 2015, is the new home to our small-scale food hub!
The site’s barn now serves as the base of operations for the LEAP Mobile Market, as well as the packing house for the LEAP Farm Share program. At Heritage Point, with its easy accessibility from US-460 and I-81, we aggregate produce from our wide partner network of local farmers, which we then efficiently sort, package, and distribute through our programs.
While our food hub (defined by the USDA as “a facility… facilitating the aggregation, storage, processing, distribution, and/or marketing of locally/regionally-produced food products”) is currently somewhat limited in scale (in 2017, we moved about $110K worth of local food through our Mobile Market and Farm Share), this big, beautiful facility opens the door to grow our capacity, serve more local farmers, and facilitate the movement of a lot more healthy, sustainable, locally-grown food from fields to forks. Stay tuned for updates as we continue to build the infrastructure needed to support a resilient local food system that serves the best interests of all our community’s farmers and eaters.

Volunteers needed for Grandin Chillage 6/29

Support local food by pouring (or even just drinking) beer! LEAP is partnering with the Grandin Chillage on Friday, June 29th. We need approximately 6 volunteers to pour beer, tentatively in 2 shifts (4:00-7:00 or  7:00-10:00). A portion of each beer sold will benefit LEAP, helping us to fund our programs and build a resilient local food system. The evening’s featured local brews come from Chaos Mountain in Callaway; admission is free with your Co+Op Owners card, or $5 otherwise. Even if you can’t commit to volunteering, come have a cold beverage with your neighbors and support LEAP’s mission at the same time! If you’re interesting in helping out, contact Sam@LEAPforLocalFood.org or 540-632-1360.

LEAP Kitchen User Spotlight: Hanu Truck

Hanu Truck offers fast, casual, Korean-inspired eats. Hailing from the Raleigh-Durham area, we’re so very glad that Patrick and Jessica have chosen to make their new home in Roanoke, and if you have the good sense to taste their delicious buns, noodles, or rice bowls, we’re sure you’ll agree. Their food is organic, locally-sourced when possible, and everything is made in-house at the LEAP Kitchen. In addition to operating the food truck, Hanu also caters, so whatever your special event, they offer a range of services to meet your KBBQ needs. Be sure to catch Patsy, their food truck, on TwitterFacebook, and Instagram, as they roam the streets of Roanoke and beyond!
