Farmers for America film screening & discussion

Farmers For America: A Documentary to Celebrate, Support, & Inspire Young Farmers

WHO WILL FEED US? The average age of the U.S. farmer is 60. Half of America’s farmland is going to change hands in the next 12 years. 20% of our food is imported. This is the story of young people who are stepping up.

Join us Wednesday, July 10th from 7:15-9:30 at the Grandin Theater, 1310 Grandin Rd SW, Roanoke VA 24015. This free community screening is hosted by LEAP. Following the film, there will be a panel of local farmers and farmer supporters who will help bring this national conversation to the community level.

Thanks to Apple Ridge Farm, Blue Ridge Land Conservancy, Roanoke College, Roanoke Outside, Virginia Association for Biological Farming, and Virginia Cooperative Extension – Roanoke for making this screening and discussion possible.!

Double SNAP Benefits at Roanoke Co+Op!

Oh SNAP! Roanoke Co+op – both the Grandin Village and Downtown locations – now offers more incentives to SNAP/EBT shoppers by doubling their SNAP dollars spent on fresh produce with Virginia Fresh Match (up to $10)! Virginia Fresh Match doubles the value of SNAP benefits spent at participating farmers markets and retail grocery stores. For example, a SNAP shopper purchases $20 in fresh fruits and vegetables and pays only $10. It’s simple:

  1. Pick out fresh produce at either of Roanoke Co+op retail locations
  2. Let your cashier know that you’ll be using your SNAP benefits. This will let the cashier know that you would like to receive the SNAP Match, up to $10 in SNAP dollars.
  3. Enjoy your purchase!

Incorporated in 1975, Roanoke Natural Foods Co+op provides our community with nutritious food choices and earth-friendly products. Operating from cooperative principles, they support sustainable environmental practices, local organic farmers, local businesses, and our community. They’re the largest food co-op in Virginia and one of the 70+ Virginia Fresh Match incentive sites around the Commonwealth. For more information about these and other local Virginia Fresh Match sites, click here.

TomatoFest @ Grandin Village Farmers Market

Join us at the Grandin Village Farmers Market on Saturday, July 13 for our annual celebration of summer, and of everyone’s favorite vegetable (or is it a fruit?)!

Enjoy sampling our farmer’s tomatoes and vote for your favorite! Taste dishes featuring local tomatoes by Local Roots Restaurant and Rockfish Food and Wine. Live music by a crowd favorite Jordan Fallon!

We will also host our July Zucchinis and Bellinis event, this month sponsored by River and Rail Restaurant. They will be serving locally sourced brunch cocktails to enjoy as you shop from your community farmers! So bring a friend who’s new to the market, and enjoy an adult beverage and some tomato-y goodness as you stock up on the freshest goodies around, produced by local folks you know and trust!

West End Community Supper

After an extended hiatus, the community cook-out in the West End is back! Gather and break bread with us! Feel free to bring a side dish, or a friend or neighbor, or just your appetite! Hope to see you Wednesday, July 24 at 5:30 at the West End Farmers Market (1210 Patterson Ave. SW)! Thanks to the Roanoke Co+Op for making it happen!

Fresh Food Rx entering its fifth year!

LEAP is an active member of Healthy Roanoke Valley, a collaboration of organizations and businesses working together to help improve the health and wellness of people in the Valley. Healthy Roanoke Valley, thanks to funding from Carilion Clinic, piloted Fresh Foods Rx in 2015 at Carilion Clinic SE, and in 2016 expanded to two additional sites: Carilion Clinic Roanoke-Salem and New Horizons Healthcare Center. In 2019, Fresh Foods Rx is reaching even more participants at new locations including Carilion Internal Medicine.

The Fresh Foods Rx program works with healthcare providers, clients, and community educators to improve the health of people who suffer from or are at risk of diet-related diseases. The program lasts 12 weeks. Each week, participants receive education related to health, diet, and nutrition, and then receive a $20 “prescription” to spend on fresh, local fruits and vegetables at the on-site Mobile Market!

In addition to positively impacting at-risk patients’ health outcomes, the program also supports local family farmers, by purchasing over $25,000 of fresh, healthy produce over the life of the program! See chart below for a more in-depth look at how the program works.

Don’t miss out on the best of summer!
So much good, fresh food, friendly farmer faces, education opportunities, live music, and fun to be had while supporting our local economy and sustainable farming practices! In addition to TomatoFest and Zucchinis & Bellinis on the 13th, with guitar tunes by Jordan Fallon, we’ll have a ton of live music all month long! Come bask in the summertime abundance!

Fresh Food in the West End
In addition to the freshest, sustainably-raised produce you can find anywhere, we’ll also have lots of great prepared-food vendors this month. Next Tuesday, July 9, our friends from Hanu Truck will be serving up their Korean-inspired street food (we’ll also have live tunes!), and the following week on July 16, new LEAP Kitchen member Smokin’ Pig BBQ will be slingin’ his stellar ‘cue! Come stock up on fresh ingredients, but save the cooking for another night!
