2018 recap, & looking ahead to the year to come!

Hope you all enjoyed the holidays, and were able to cherish some time-honored food-focused family traditions (black-eyed peas and collards on New Years Day, anyone?). Thanks for your support in 2018! With your help, we had a great year providing market outlets for local farmers and food producers, ensuring equitable access to fresh produce throughout Roanoke and beyond, and supporting a healthy community and resilient local food system. A few highlights of our impacts last year:

  • 3,200+ SNAP/EBT transactions at LEAP markets, each of which we MATCHED dollar-for-dollar, effectively DOUBLING low-income families’ buying power for fresh fruits and veggies
  • $32,965 in Healthy Food Incentives redeemed by under-served and low-income families
  • 10 weekly Mobile Market stops in Roanoke neighborhoods that lack easy access to fresh food
  • 60+ participating local farms, over half of which were very small (<$10K annual sales) and beginning (in operation <5 years) farmers.
  • $355,435 in gross sales for local food produced by small-scale, sustainable farmers
  • 30 food businesses operating out of the LEAP Kitchen, our shared commercial kitchen and food business incubator

We look forward to growing our impact in 2019! We hope you’ll continue to eat the best-quality food around, grown by folks you know, and encourage your friends and community members to do the same! And if you want to start the new year knowing that you’re building our local food economy and ensuring that everyone has equitable access to locally-grown food, please consider a tax-deductible donation to LEAP. Thanks, and here’s to another great year of local food!

January Market options

The short days and cold temperatures of midwinter are no excuse to resort to inferior food! After a brief holiday hiatus, the West End Farmers Market resumes its regular hours (Tuesday, 3-6pm) on Jan. 8th and every Tuesday thereafter with the fresh veggies, baked goods, ready-to-eat foods, and much more. The January edition of our monthly winter Grandin Village Farmers Market is coming up on Saturday, 1/19, from 10am to 1pm, INSIDE the Grandin CoLab. Come stock up on the freshest food around, grown by sustainable, local farmers you know and trust. Plus our winter markets boast plenty more reasons to #DigLocal, including hot ready-to-eat foods, artisan-made crafts, and more!

2019 LEAP Farm Share

Looking for an easy, convenient way to eat fresh, healthy foods and support local farmers, all season long? Join LEAP’s 2019 Farm Share! LEAP aggregates local fruits, vegetables, eggs, and more from farmers within 100 miles of Roanoke. Farm Share members then pick up their curated box of fresh, seasonal food every week, (24 weeks, May through October, with two built-in vacation days), from one of the pick-up locations.

Share options include: Veggie Share (popular, staple vegetables and occasional specialty crops broaden your veggie horizons), Fruit Share (berries, tree fruits, melons and more including opportunity for food preservation projects throughout the season, *22 weeks*), Medley Share (a selection of BOTH fruits and veggies), Egg Share (pasture-raised laying hens supply one dozen rich, healthful eggs. Egg sharers must also be registered for another main season share), and Winter Share (7 Weeks, November – December: local meats, cheeses, bread, canned goods, eggs and produce; gluten-free and vegetarian options available).

Pick-up locations for 2019 include the West End Farmers Market (Tuesday 3-6), Carilion Roanoke Memorial Riverwalk parking deck (Wednesday 3:15-6:15), and NEW for 2019, Roanoke City Health and Human Services at Civic Mall (Wednesday afternoon, time TBA). We’ll send a weekly email newsletter to remind shareholders about pick-up and to tell you what’s in the share that week.

Registration isn’t live yet, but will open very soon – be on the lookout for an email! All shares are filled on “first paid — first served” basis. Reserve your shares early, before our pick up sites are full! We will have a waiting list, as needed. All shares must be paid in full by April 15th, 2019. As an early-bird bonus, pay by March 29 and we’ll throw in a $10 gift card to any LEAP Farmers Market!

SNAPshare: All shares are *half price* with your SNAP/EBT Card, or with proof of Medicaid enrollment!
