LEAP nurtures our food community to create an equitable food and farming system which prioritizes health and abundance.We do this by supporting community initiatives, markets, farms, and farmers.

LEAP’s work

We are a service organization centered in the Roanoke region. We are committed to listening and responding to the ever-changing needs, challenges, and opportunities of our food community. LEAP works collaboratively with community partners, farmers, food producers, and consumers throughout Roanoke City, the Roanoke Valley, and the state. LEAP’s local program team works to create economically viable market outlets for local farmers and food producers and to efficiently and equitably connect consumers to local food (current programs include LEAP Farm Share, West End Farmers Market, Grandin Village Farmers Market, LEAP Kitchen, LEAP Mobile Market, Community Gardens, Healthy Food Incentives). LEAP’s regional and state teams work closely with partners to build networks, provide technical assistance, and create strong relationships in order to support more resilient local, regional, and state food systems (current programs include Regional Food System Planning, Farm to School, Virginia Fresh Match statewide SNAP nutrition incentives). Marketing & Communications Coordinator

Position Description

LEAP aims to enhance and amplify our work through strategic and collaborative communications. This position requires close collaboration with LEAP’s team and diverse programs to meet our needs at a collective and program level. The ideal candidate will be both collaborative and communicative. Attention to detail, a keen eye toward visual “light touch” graphic design work, content writing, and copyediting are preferred. The candidate must have experience in website maintenance (such as WordPress), social media, and general best practices in communications and digital technology.

This is a new position at LEAP, which means the ideal candidate will have the opportunity to shape our communications and drive the organization towards a vision. As such, this position requires self-motivation, enthusiasm, and organized focus. 

At a baseline, the Marketing & Communications Coordinator will be responsible for implementing LEAP’s marketing and communications plan. This will involve handling day-to-day communications, via our social media accounts and website, and responding to inquiries from customers, community members, and media. The Coordinator will work with LEAP’s local, regional, and statewide teams to develop, create, disseminate, and evaluate marketing and communications. The Coordinator will develop messaging and visuals with the teams’ input, create a dissemination plan for the communications, and manage all existing communications. You must be community centered, committed to food justice and equity, and communicate with transparency and clarity. This position reports to the Support Team Manager. 

Responsibilities

Organizational Communications

  • Oversee the implementation of LEAP’s Marketing & Communications Plan, including communications goals and desired impacts, target audience/outlets, target reach, and strategies and tactics.
  • Maintain and regularly update the organization’s communications assets and resources (including the website, social media handles, toolkits, promotional material, etc.) to serve existing and attract new clients, promote organizational successes, and support organizational positioning as a thought leader for regional food system development
  • Curate content for and draft/edit/design/manage organizational collateral, including annual report, newsletters, brochures, website, videos, etc.
  • Maintain social media handles and improve LEAP’s reach, community education, and engagement
  • Conduct press engagement and media outreach, draft press releases, create press tracking systems, maintain press list, etc.
  • Strengthen LEAP branding, articulating our story through qualitative data, client testimonials, impact, and thought leadership
  • Maintain email management system (Mailchimp) and client/donor database
  • Integrate and synchronize LEAP’s digital assets including the website, social media platforms, client management software, Survey Monkey software, online event calendars, etc.
  • Monitor and analyze LEAP’s digital metrics and analytics to assess impact and develop online presence
  • Liaise with communications related consultants, designers, videographers, etc. as appropriate
  • Build out LEAP’s infrastructure for fundraiser campaigns, financial donations, and assist staff and Board on fundraising messaging 
Program Communications
  • Develop and implement communications plans for each LEAP team and its subsequent programs, including the state, regional, and local teams 
  • Create and maintain segmented lists of clients, donors, partners, etc. for newsletters and other communications
  • Establish and maintain strong, trusting relationships with LEAP’s team members, to better translate their needs and goals into effective and reflective communications.
  • Work as a member of the LEAP Support Team to better serve and support LEAP’s teams and adapt to their changing needs.
Partnerships & Thought leadership
  • Represent LEAP externally in aspects of organizational/program when appropriate
  • Stay regularly informed of potential stakeholders, consumer/market/funder trends, etc., to inform LEAP’s ongoing external messaging
  • Understand LEAP’s approach to systems work and strategic planning, and help LEAP promote our approach

Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes

  •  Experience with customer service, visual and written media, marketing and communications and food service/distribution/access (preferable)
  • Experience in or strong instincts for storytelling – not only stories of people but also converting data into stories 
  • Experience in creating digital / social media content for Instagram, Facebook, Twitter
  • Basic graphic design skills (Photoshop, InDesign, and/or Canva)
  • Working knowledge of website platforms, email management systems, and client database management
  • Strong written and verbal communication skils
  • A natural relationship builder- you empathize with others. You are people- and community-centered.
  • Self-starter motivation with strong organizational and time management skills – you collect what you need and make things happen!
  • Critical thinking and self-reflection – you value curiosity, want to learn and grow as a team member and person, and take feedback and failures in stride.
  • The ability to thrive in a variable and demanding environment – you are solutions-oriented and highly adaptable.
  • Experience and comfort with computers, Microsoft Office products, databases, excel, email, and social media platforms.
  • A passion for community, local food, farming, and equity. 

Additional Information/Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • This position is hourly and year-round. Starting at 20-30 hours a week and with potential to grow to full-time and/or salary.  
  • Position will be housed at LEAP’s offices in Roanoke with some remote work possible.  
  • Hourly rate $15-$17/hr depending on experience
