Seeking host sites for Mobile Market stops!

The LEAP Mobile Market brings local, healthy, and fresh food to Roanoke neighborhoods without easy access to fresh produce. We’re currently developing our schedule of weekly stops for the 2019 market season, and we need your help! We’re seeking partners to help us host a weekly farmers market; if you know of an organization or business in an area that doesn’t have easy access to fresh food, where people are already gathering and taking part in community, and who could help us spread the word and get people to come shop, we would love to bring the Mobile Market to them each week! We plan to finalize the schedule by the end of the month; email markets@leapforlocalfood.org with your ideas as soon as possible!

2019 LEAP Farm Share registration now open!

Farm Share (our version of a CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture) is much more than a weekly box of food – it’s a powerful investment in your health, community, and local economy. LEAP aggregates local fruits, vegetables, eggs, and more from sustainable farmers within 100 miles of Roanoke. Farm Share members then pick up their curated box of fresh, seasonal food every week, (24 weeks, May through October, with two built-in vacation days), from one of the pick-up locations.

Share options include: Veggie Share (popular, staple vegetables and occasional specialty crops broaden your veggie horizons), Fruit Share (berries, tree fruits, melons and more), *22 weeks*), Medley Share (a selection of BOTH fruits and veggies), Egg Share (pasture-raised laying hens supply one dozen rich, healthful eggs. Egg sharers must also be registered for another main season share), and Winter Share (7 Weeks, November – December: local meats, cheeses, bread, canned goods, eggs and produce; gluten-free and vegetarian options available).

Pick-up locations for 2019 include the West End Farmers Market (Tuesday 3-6), Carilion Roanoke Memorial Riverwalk parking deck (Wednesday 3:15-6:15), and NEW for 2019, Roanoke Department of Health & Human Services at Civic Mall on Williamson Road (Wednesday afternoons, time TBA). We’ll send a weekly email newsletter to remind shareholders about pick-up and to tell you what’s in the share that week.

All shares are filled on “first paid — first served” basis. Learn more and register on our website. Registration closes April 15th. The program does fill up; we have a waiting list, as needed. Pay in full by March 29, and get our Early Bird Bonus: a $10 gift certificate to any LEAP Farmers Market! All shares are HALF PRICE with your EBT card/SNAP benefits, or with proof of Medicaid enrollment. Questions? Contact the Farm Share coordinator at farmshare@LEAPforLocalFood.org or 540-492-5311.

Last call for market vendors, and vendor training

As part of our mission, LEAP provides an accessible, profitable venue for small-scale local businesses, prioritizing local, sustainable agriculture and environmentally-sound, socially-just practices. We’re always searching for the highest-quality local products, and as we prepare for next year, we need your help finding the next generation of LEAP farmers market vendors! Know anyone who might be interested in selling their goods at market? Maybe you yourself have an inkling to add your products to our vibrant marketplace? If so, please check out our Market Vendors page, where you can find our Vendor Information and Application packet (available as a PDF or an online form)! Applications are due Friday, February 15!

Also, on Saturday, March 2nd, from 9am – 2:30pm at CoLab in Grandin Village, we’ll be hosting a Farmers Market Vendor Training. Peer-led presentations and workshops will help you make more money as a market vendor; topics will include booth display, quality customer service, utilizing social media to boost sales, available technical and funding resources, and more. $10/person includes lunch. For more information, contact markets@leapforlocalfood.org.

Winter table at Melrose Towers

Ever since we started the LEAP Mobile Market, one of our favorite stops has been Melrose Towers, where we can consistently rely on a dedicated group of residents anxiously awaiting our arrival. Thanks to funding from Carilion Clinic and the Community Foundation Serving Western Virginia, we’re able to offer low-income seniors at the Roanoke Redevelopment and Housing Authority site a $5 weekly voucher, good for fresh, wholesome food. For many folks, that wholesome food is otherwise difficult to access, whether due to distance to the closest grocery store, mobility issues, lack of transportation, cost, or other factors. Based on the success of the program, we’re happy to announce we’ve expanded into the winter months, offering a fresh selection of greens, eggs, root veggies, and more, all in the comfort of their community room!
Next Grandin Village Winter Market: February 16!
Come stock up on early-season produce, storage crops, baked goods, prepared foods, and oh-so-much more on Saturday, 2/16, from 10am to 1pm – RSVP on the Facebook event page, and feel free to share widely! If your thoughts have turned to spring like ours, go ahead and save the date for the grand opening of our regular market season on April 20!

Fresh Food in the West End
If any given Tuesday gets too cold, look for us inside! But regardless of the temperature, we’ll be around back of the Freedom First branch at 1210 Patterson Ave SW every Tuesday, 3-6pm, with plenty of delicious local fare. Very happy to announce awesome local non-profit House of Bread will have fresh-baked bread every Tuesday, starting Feb. 19!
