Market produce so great, you’ll HAVE to tell a friend

August is an awesome month in the local food world– find the the most delicious summer produce at our markets. Get ready for crisp peppers, juicy peaches, sweet corn, and every color and shape tomato you can imagine. Our Community Markets in the West End and Grandin Village and the LEAP Mobile Market are in full swing, so come check them out!  If you are up to your eyeballs in produce– freeze, dry or can it for the winter months (rent The Kitchen for a canning party!).

To get you extra excited about coming to the market, we launched a new campaign for the month of August that is geared at getting YOU some free food. Any day in August, if you bring a friend who’s never been to the Grandin or West End, we’ll give you both $2 to spend at the market. Our regular customers, after all, make the best tour guides for new customers. Just bring new shoppers by the market manager booth to get your coupons! Limit one per household per market. Include your email address when you turn in the coupon and we’ll enter you in a month’s end drawing for a great market prize!

LEAP is seeking TWO AmeriCorps members

LEAP is teaming up with The Advancement Foundation to host AmeriCorps Members at LEAP in 2016-2017. LEAP is looking for a part-time AmeriCorps State Member (starts September 1) to support our Mobile MarketMarkets, and Healthy Food Incentive programs. We’re also seeking a full time AmeriCorps VISTA (starts mid-September) to help LEAP build capacity, expand current programs, develop new programs, and create a more resilient local food system. Come be part of the LEAP Team!

If you or someone you know is interested, please email Maureen Best at LEAP or staff at The Advancement Foundation (Samantha Lukasiewicz for the AmeriCorps State or Judy Wood for the AmeriCorps VISTA).

Tee Reynolds has been a happy, smiling face at the LEAP Markets and his animal noises (where is that cricket?) have entertained lots of kids! Tee decided it is time for him to focus his energy on other work in the community. We will miss him at market, but he will always be part of the LEAP family!

Join us in welcoming our new neighbors! The Deschutes Street Pub will be a blast, and LEAP is one of the participating organizations. Say hi to LEAP volunteers at the event,  visit our booth to meet LEAPsters, enjoy a delicious beer, and have fun knowing that the proceeds are benefit good causes like LEAP!

Peaches, Corn, Tomatoes, oh my!
This is truly the season of plenty at the Grandin market. Melons are on the way, peppers are coming on strong, and squash is everywhere. Now, if only those pesky hens would lay more eggs in this heat…

Fresh Food in the West End
Need a mid-week restock on fresh foods? Fresh foods from Roanoke, Floyd, Franklin County and more every Tuesday 3-6pm behind Freedom First. Currently we host vendors like Good Food Good People, Ferguson Farm, FatCat Baked Goodies, Green Acres Farm, and The Professor’s Garden. Like all LEAP markets, SNAP benefits are accepted and doubled.

Become a LEAP Community Partner! Support LEAP and snag some great deals at the Community Markets. LEAP Partnerships are open to businesses- let LEAP help promote the great work you do in the community!

Buy a LEAP Market Gift Certificate for a longtime market-goer or to introduce a friend to the market.

Want to volunteer with LEAP?  LEAP runs on community support. Let us know if you have a special skill you’d love to share!
