Last chance to register for the 2018 LEAP Farm Share

It’s still not too late to take advantage of the easiest, most convenient way to eat fresh, healthy foods and support local farmers all season long: Join LEAP’s 2018 Farm Share! LEAP aggregates local fruits, vegetables, eggs, and more from farmers within 100 miles of Roanoke. Farm Share members then pick up their curated box of fresh, seasonal food every week, (24 weeks, May through October, with two built-in vacation days), from one of the pick-up locations, the West End Farmers Market (Tuesday 3-6) and Carilion Roanoke Memorial Riverwalk parking deck (Wednesday 3:15-6:15). We’ll send a weekly email newsletter to remind shareholders about pick-up and to tell you what’s in the share that week. Exclusive food preservation classes will also be available to Farm Share members at The LEAP Kitchen.  Shares are filled on “first paid — first served” basis. All shares must be paid in full by April 16th, 2018.  Act now and don’t miss out on the freshest food, hand-selected each week, and responsibly sourced straight from the farm to your family’s table. SNAPshare: Get a Farm Share for *half price* with your EBT Card!

Grandin Village Farmers Market Opening Day / Earth Day!

Join us Saturday, April 21 for the event you’ve been anxiously waiting for all winter long: Opening Day of the Grandin Village Farmers Market 2018 season! This year’s opening happens to coincide with Roanoke’s Earth Day celebration, which is returning to Grandin Village this year. Come for the tantalizing lineup of local food producers and vendors (including plenty of new faces!), stay for the live music, activities, camaraderie, and fun! Ride your bike to market and take advantage of RIDE Solutions‘ bike valet service, East Coasters Bike Shop‘s free safety checks and service diagnostics, and e-bike demos (ID required). Check out our Facebook event, and please bring your friends, family, and neighbors to enjoy the kick-off of another great market season in Grandin Village!

Give Up! to support LEAP at Roanoke Co+Op this month

Through Give Up, shoppers at the Roanoke Co+Op (both the Grandin and Downtown locations) may round up their purchases to the nearest dollar and contribute their change to LEAP for the entire month of April! Your small change can have a huge impact on LEAP’s capacity to nurture healthy communities and resilient local food systems. Funds raised this month will support our LEAP Mobile Market Senior Incentive program, providing vouchers for low-income senior citizens at the Mobile Market. So, for whatever you don’t pick up from our markets, head to the Co+Op and be sure to Give Up!

We’re hiring! Join the LEAP team as Virginia Fresh Match and Program Grant Manager

LEAP is seeking a Program Grant Manager to support LEAP’s community-based grants and programs. Working with Virginia Fresh Match (VFM, a statewide brand and network that doubles the value of SNAP at point-of-sale), the right candidate will help implement SNAP nutrition incentives at 80+ farmers market and grocery retail sites in Virginia, with a goal of improving dietary quality of participating SNAP consumers by increasing fruit and vegetable (F&V) consumption. The project will develop equitable and sustainable food systems and agricultural economies in regions throughout Virginia, with a special focus on local food access and affordability using place-based initiatives and community-based practices; the project grant manager will design, track, and analyze these grant outcomes and impacts.

This is a largely grant-funded full time position for a three-year grant. Hiring is contingent on grant award. Check out the posting on our website to learn more, to apply, and to help us spread the word. Anyone interested should email their resume and cover letter to Maureen@LEAPforLocalFood.org by April 30.

Grandin Village Canvass Day: Saturday, April 14, 11am – 1pm

We’ll be holding a canvass day again this year on the last Saturday before the Grandin Village Farmers Market opens for the season. Come join our market vendors, staff, and friends as we spread the gospel of fresh, clean food and keeping our dollars local with our Raleigh Court neighbors. Meet at 11:00am on Saturday, April 14 at the market site (2080 Westover Ave SW, Roanoke), and from there we’ll head out in small teams to pound the pavement, knock on doors, and share our excitement about our community’s market before re-grouping at 1pm. The more the merrier – bring your friends, neighbors, kids. So we have an idea of how many to expect, please let us know if you plan to join (or if you have questions or concerns) by calling or emailing Ned (540-632-2017, Ned@LEAPforLocalFood.org).
