LEAP hiring AmeriCorps State Member!

LEAP is looking for a part-time AmeriCorps State Member (starting in August or September) to support our Mobile Market, Markets, and Healthy Food Incentive programs. Come be part of the LEAP Team!

About the position

The Member will work with LEAP to expand the Mobile Market, increase access to healthy food and improve food security in Roanoke City. As the Mobile Market expands, the Member will work to strengthen existing stops and build the foundation for new stops. As part of the Mobile Market stops and program, the Member will strengthen relationships in the neighborhoods, interact with customers and community members, support the Healthy Food Incentive programs, and provide education and outreach.

Activities:

  • Lead presentations at fairs/events/community partners about local food, healthy eating, LEAP Markets (including Mobile Market), Healthy Start, Fresh Food Prescription Program and Healthy Roanoke Valley
  • Distribute materials to service providers and community partners
  • Strengthen the Mobile Market program and relationships at current and future Mobile Market stops
  • Engage with neighbors and customers at Mobile Market stops
  • Work closely with community partners to promote and participate in the Mobile Market
  • Work with fixed-site Markets in West End and Grandin Village to provide educational programming and to provide outreach about the markets/Healthy Food Incentive (HFI) program.
  • Education programming topics include but are not limited to: how to shop for fresh produce and how to eat seasonally, simple and easy cooking demonstrations, preserving seasonal produce (canning and freezing), and nutritional benefits of eating healthy.
  • LEAP staff and the AmeriCorps Member will administer surveys to HFI participants and to Mobile Market customers twice per season. In addition, also conduct customer counts at markets throughout the season.
  • Provide outreach and in-person support for LEAP community partners on collaborative projects including Fresh Foods Prescription Program and Healthy Start, both initiatives of Healthy Roanoke Valley and housed in United Way of the Valleys.
