Organization Description

Local Environmental Agriculture Project (LEAP)’s mission is to nurture healthy communities and resilient local food systems. LEAP programs provide market outlets for local farmers, improve access to local food, increase affordability of fresh produce, and support the growth and development of food-based businesses.

About the Mobile Market

LEAP Mobile Market is a farm stand on wheels bringing fresh produce from our local farmers (within 100 miles) to neighborhoods in Roanoke! The aim of the Mobile Market is to increase equitable access for all Roanoke residents to high quality, affordable, culturally appropriate produce. LEAP established the Mobile Market in the spring of 2015 and it serves Roanoke neighborhoods that have no or limited access to full-service grocery stores. The Mobile Market accepts and doubles SNAP-EBT (food stamps) and offers other Healthy Food Incentive programs. Healthy Food Incentive programs help make fresh produce more affordable and incentivize the consumption of fresh produce. In 2018, the Mobile Market will serve 10 stops per week, focused on neighborhoods in NW and SE Roanoke.

Position Description

We are seeking a passionate person committed to the values of food justice to fill the Mobile Market Manager position. The Mobile Market Manager will manage the daily on-site operations of the LEAP Mobile Market, conduct outreach to customers, promote and explain Healthy Food Incentive programs, collaborate with community partners, assist with the LEAP Farm Share, and help manage inventory (fresh produce). The Market Manager will be responsible for maintaining strict market standards and will work to foster a vibrant, community-focused environment at each market stop in the diverse neighborhoods of Roanoke. This position will require an energetic, motivated individual with strong communication skills and attention to detail. This position is an intensive customer service management opportunity. This position is ideal for someone interested in pursuing a career related to food, nutrition, gardening, agriculture, retail, sustainability, community engagement, non-profit work, public health, etc. The Market Manager will also share responsibility for the onsite management duties (no more than 1/month) of the Grandin Village Farmers Market (GVFM), open seasonally from late April-November. The Mobile Market Manager is a seasonal position (late April-mid November) and requires weekend and evening work.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate records of all transactions through the point-of-sale system, proper use of payment systems and reimbursements (i.e. SNAP, Healthy Food Incentives, debit, gift certificates) at the Mobile Market and GVFM
  • Collect required program evaluation (surveys, demographic information, qualitative data) at Markets
  • Communicate respectfully and transparently with market customers, relaying customer concerns and requests to Program Coordinator
  • Assist in maintaining product inventory for the Mobile Market
  • Operate and maintain the Mobile Market vehicle safely and efficiently
  • Assist Program Coordinator in pickup and delivery of CSA and other produce to pre-set locations
  • Ensure all products sold are of the highest quality and at peak freshness
  • Uphold the highest standards of cleanliness and sanitation for Market infrastructure
  • Work with Program Coordinator to post social media content regularly
  • Maintain partnerships with community organizations, volunteers, and educational groups
  • Collaborate with Program Coordinator and other LEAP staff to create community focused educational events
  • Bring Mobile Market to community events for educational programs

Required Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of experience working in sales, customer service, or farmers market setting
  • Ability to interface with a diverse customer base, providing high quality customer service to all
  • High levels of organization, time management, and a strong work ethic
  • Must be able to work independently and work as a key part of the LEAP team
  • Must be eager to work hard in all kinds of weather (cold, heat, rain, snow, wind)
  • Safe driving record, valid license, proof of car insurance and registration
  • Aptitude for physically demanding, fast-paced work (ability to safely lift 50 pounds repeatedly)
  • Proficient in computer programs (Word, Excel, iPad interface, social media)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Second language preferred
  • Farming, cooking, nutrition, and food preparation experience a plus
  • Experience working in Roanoke or similar urban setting with low-income areas preferred

Compensation

$12/hr, 35-40 hrs/week, Seasonal, late April-Mid November
