Fresh Foods Prescription Program

Fresh Foods Rx

FVRX appleLEAP is an active member of Healthy Roanoke Valley, a collaboration of organizations and businesses working together to help improve the health and wellness of people in the Valley. Healthy Roanoke Valley, thanks to funding from Carilion Clinic, piloted the Fresh Foods Rx in 2015 at Carilion Clinic SE. In 2016, the program expanded to two additional sites: Carilion Clinic Roanoke Salem and New Horizons Healthcare Center. In 2017, Fresh Foods Rx will continue at the same three sites, reaching even more participants.

The Fresh Foods Rx program works with healthcare providers, clients and community educators to improve the health of people who suffer from or are at risk of diet-related diseases. The program lasts 12 weeks. Each week, participants receive education related to health, diet, and nutrition, and then receive a $20 prescription to spend on fruits and vegetables at the on-site Mobile Market.
