Notes from mid-winter

Spring must be around the corner– the days are getting noticeably longer and farmers are excitedly combing through seed catalogs. Here at LEAP, we are also in planning mode– prepping for another great year of markets, dreaming up new and better ways to increase access to fresh food and working hard to support local food businesses. The “off season” days are packed as we prep for a busy peak growing season. Keep reading to learn more!

LEAP Farm Shares are back!

Back for our second year, LEAP is once again offering our weekly CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program. Each week starting in May, Farm Share members get to taste the in-season bounty. LEAP works with local farmers within 100 miles of Roanoke, and provides an “aggregated” share of the local produce. With multiple share sizes, fruit and vegetable (or both!) options, and an optional weekly egg share, there’s something for every locavore out there. To learn more and register, visit the LEAP Farm Share web page. New in 2018, we are also offering a Winter Share full of handmade goods, storage crops, and a few surprises. Registration is open until April 16th, but spots will fill up fast so don’t delay!

In addition, SNAP users can combine SNAP Double Value with the purchase of a Farm Share. This means SNAP users can get full Farm Shares at half price when paying with SNAP-EBT.

Market Vendor Applications due this month

If you grow or prepare goods within 100 miles of Roanoke and want to sell at a LEAP market– now is the time to apply to be part of the 2018 market season!  We’re currently accepting applications for 2018 vendors at both the West End and Grandin Village Farmers Markets. If you’d like to sell your produce, cut flowers or plants, baked goods or other prepared foods, animal products, crafts, or anything else produced locally (subject to approval), take a look at our Vendor Information Packetand fill out an application! Applications are due Wednesday, February 14.
Medicaid Incentives are back in 2018

We’re excited to announce that, thanks to generous funding from Carilion Clinic, we will continue to offer matching dollars at LEAP markets for Medicaid Members. Just like our popular SNAP Double Value, just present your Medicaid card to the market manager, spend up to $30 (cash or debit), and receive matching dollars for fruits and vegetables. We will match $1 for $1 up to $30 per family at each LEAP market.
