Regional Food System Work and Farmer Listening Sessions

In partnership with the Roanoke Valley-Allegany Regional Commission’s  Local Food Planning Committee, LEAP released the “Roanoke Local” Regional Food and Agriculture Report. This report compiles existing data from the US Agriculture census, Virginia Department of Agriculture, and food system assessments from the region to create a starting point for us to think about our regional food shed. One thing we learned from this process is that the farmer voice is missing.

To capture the farmer voice, LEAP, together with Virginia Cooperative Extension agents, is holding a series of Farmer Listening Sessions in the Roanoke Valley.  The Listening Sessions will be facilitated forums for farmers to discuss their needs, challenges, and barriers to producing food for the local and regional market. All farmers, ranchers, food producers, and stakeholders are welcome to attend. Click on the dates below for more information and spread the word!

February 21, 6pm in Bonsack
February 27, 6pm in Rocky Mount
March 6th, 6pm in Christiansburg

The deadline for LEAP Market vendor applications is Feb. 8th

Do you farm, bake, produce value-added foods, or make non-food handmade items? Our community markets in Grandin Village and West End are seeking vendors for the 2017 season. If you create a product within 100 miles of Roanoke, you qualify!

Check out our vendor policies and download the application to learn more. This year, you can also apply online!

Update on LEAP Market Healthy Food Incentives

Together we are stronger– because of community support, LEAP continues to expand our Healthy Food Incentive Program.

We’re proud to announce that, thanks to a generous grant from The Foundation for Roanoke Valley, the LEAP Mobile Market will expand our Senior Incentive Program in 2017. We will provide more vouchers for low income seniors at Melrose Towers and add a new weekly Mobile Market stop (with vouchers) to serve senior citizens at a second Roanoke Housing and Redevelopment site.

Additionally, LEAP received funding from Wholesome Wave to pilot an innovative new incentive program for Medicaid recipients to double their dollars at LEAP markets. Stay tuned for more information!
